The hollywood reporter's original review is below on may 5, 2000, ridley scott and russell crowe unveiled their r-rated roman epic, gladiator, in theaters nationwide the film claimed five oscars at the 73rd academy awards, including best picture. Amazingly, sandwiched between these last two is a work that sits easily among scott's best the magnificent gladiator is a sprawling, enthralling roman orgy of blood, passion, betrayal and revenge it is monumental movie-making: visually thrilling, technically astonishing, and emotionally engaging. Gladiator definitely is a classic film as it combines a simple, but moving, story with beautiful scenery, filming, direction and score it is truly a complete movie i am mostly compelled with the beautiful script which in a way reminds me of poetry, though it is still everyday language.
At least that's where ''gladiator'' seems to take place -- there or some other mythical area, since the roman colosseum is roughly the size of the death star from ''star wars,'' thanks to the magic of computer graphics with each scene composed for an audience's delectation of the constant slaughter, the movie is both pandering and detached. Gladiator is a 2000 epic historical drama film the film was released in the united states on may 5, 2000 the film received favorable reviews from critics and grossed $457 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2000 the snob in us likes to believe that it is always books that spin off movies yet in this case.
Gladiator is in my humble opinion, a near perfect movie it works on so many levels - the acting is phenomenal, the story is compelling, the backdrop of the film is beautiful it is destined to be a classic, and is a movie that can be watched and appreciated with each subseqent viewing.
Gladiator is a triumph on the surface, it's a terrific yarn with strong, rounded characters, agonizing suspense and visceral thrills look closer and you'll find rich historical themes, and a harrowing critique of violence as amusement.
I saw the movie gladiator 3 times before i read the book, and each time i had seen the movie, i saw something new after i read the book gladiator, i saw the movie 2 more times in my opinion, the book gladiator is a great read if you want to learn alittle more about the characters. But gladiator lacks joy it employs depression as a substitute for personality, and believes that if the characters are bitter and morose enough, we won't notice how dull they are commodus ( joaquin phoenix ) is one of those spoiled, self-indulgent, petulant roman emperors made famous in the age of great roman epics, which ended with spartacus (1960. Gladiator is a movie of such astounding scope and sweep and such masterful storytelling that it makes its storyline seem classic rather than clichéd breathtakingly sumptuous visuals credibly recreate the world of rome in 180 ad, a world of unimaginable reach and power.
Gladiator was an incredible movie it is probably one of my ten favourite best picture winners, which is saying something, because there aren't as many great movies in the 2000s as there were in the 1900s.
